Set among the farms and wooded ridges of western Greene County, Mosheim is a small town with deep educational roots and an unusually rich Civil War history. It sits along U.S. 11E between Greeneville and Interstate 81, at the southern base of Big Ridge, and serves as the civic and school center for much of the western end of the county.
From Blue Springs to Mosheim
The community began around 1800 as Blue Springs, named for a spring that flowed through the settlement, and drew a number of German Lutheran families. Its modern name came from a Lutheran school founded after the Civil War and named, around 1870, for Johann Lorenz von Mosheim, an influential 18th-century German theologian. Over time the school’s name became more familiar than Blue Springs, and the whole community adopted it. (It’s generally said MOSS-hime.)
The Battle of Blue Springs
Mosheim’s best-known historic event is the Battle of Blue Springs, fought in and around the community on October 10, 1863, as part of the Union campaign to secure East Tennessee’s vital transportation routes. Federal forces under Ambrose Burnside pushed Confederate troops out of a defensive position near Blue Springs and forced them to withdraw to the northeast. It was a Union victory, and it brought the war directly into the fields and farms around town. Most of that landscape is private today, best understood from the markers and public roads.
The bridge burners of Pottertown
Mosheim’s Civil War story has a second, more complicated thread. East Tennessee held strong Union sympathies even after Tennessee joined the Confederacy, and in November 1861 local Unionists burned the railroad bridge over Lick Creek west of town. Several men from nearby Pottertown were arrested and executed — among them Christopher Alexander Haun, one of southern Appalachia’s most significant antebellum potters, whose decorated earthenware is prized by museums and collectors today. The Pottertown Bridge Burners Memorial honors five executed Greene County Unionists and tells a story that’s less Union-versus-Confederate than neighbor-versus-neighbor.
Racing, festivals, and town life
Mosheim incorporated as a town in 1974, fairly late for a community of its age. Today it’s best known for two things beyond its history: Volunteer Speedway, a high-banked dirt track near I-81 nicknamed the “World’s Fastest Dirt Track,” which draws racing fans from across the region; and Mosheim FunDays, the town’s early-summer festival of music, food, crafts, a car show, and pageants that has run since the 1980s.
Schools and community
Education has anchored Mosheim since that first Lutheran institute. The campus today holds Mosheim Elementary (around 700 students) and West Greene Middle School, with West Greene High School — home of the Buffaloes — nearby, serving students from across western Greene County. Town parks, churches, the library, and one of the county’s earliest volunteer fire departments round out community life.
Life in Mosheim today
The 2020 census recorded 2,479 residents across more than six square miles — a town that’s neither fully rural nor suburban, combining family farms and open land with modern highways, schools, and new residential growth. Closely tied to Greeneville but proud of its own identity, Mosheim is where Greene County’s agricultural past, its divided Civil War loyalties, and its modern growth all meet.
